“The National Green Hydrogen Mission is giving an impetus to innovation, infrastructure, industry and investment,” said Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his inaugural address at 2nd International Conference on Green Hydrogen.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today that India wants to be a leading center for making, using, and selling Green Hydrogen around the world.

Green Hydrogen is becoming an exciting new part of the world's energy options. It can help reduce carbon emissions in industries that are hard to switch to electric power, like refineries, fertilizer plants, steel production, and heavy-duty transport. Additionally, Green Hydrogen can store extra renewable energy for later use.

Modi Ji said that the National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched by the government, is boosting innovation, building infrastructure, supporting industries, and attracting investments. The country is investing in advanced research and development, creating partnerships between businesses and universities, and encouraging start-ups and entrepreneurs in this field. There’s also a big opportunity for new green jobs to be created. To support this, the government is focusing on training young people for careers in this sector.

In January 2023, the Modi government launched the National Green Hydrogen Mission with a budget of INR 19,744 crore. The goal of the Mission is to make India a leading center for producing, using, and exporting green hydrogen and its products. By 2030, the Mission aims to achieve a production capacity of 5 million metric tons of green hydrogen per year.

“India is committed towards creating a cleaner and greener planet. We were the first among G20 nations to fulfill our Paris commitments on green energy. These commitments were fulfilled 9 years ahead of the target of 2030. India’s installed non-fossil fuel capacity increased nearly 300% in the last 10 years. Our solar energy capacity increased over 3,000% in the same period. But we are not resting on these achievements. We remain focused on strengthening existing solutions. We are also looking at new and innovative areas. This is where Green Hydrogen comes into the picture,” said Modi in his inaugural address at 2nd International Conference on Green Hydrogen.

Modi urged scientists from around the world to collaborate and investigate different aspects of green hydrogen and it’s potential. “Scientists and innovators can suggest changes in public policy to help the Green Hydrogen sector. There are also many questions that the scientific community can look into. Can we improve the efficiency of electrolysers and other components in Green Hydrogen production? Can we explore the use of sea water and municipal waste water for production? How can we enable the use of Green Hydrogen in public transport, shipping, and inland waterways? Exploring such topics together will greatly help green energy transition across the world,” said Modi, asserting that the conference will help the exchange of many ideas on such issues.

The 2nd International Conference on Green Hydrogen (ICGH-2024) is taking place from September 11-13 at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. The conference will display green hydrogen products, services, and technologies to an international audience. It will also cover specialized research on hydrogen production, storage, distribution, and its various uses, as well as green financing, skill development, and startup efforts in the green hydrogen field.

ICGH-2024 will feature over 120 exhibitors and more than 26 sessions with technical and industry experts from India and around the world. The event is expected to attract over 7,000 delegates.
