Tata Motors' ATLAS design can handle 4-wheel drive capability

Tata Motors revealed that the ICE version of the company's newest SUV, the Curvv coupe, will include the company's innovative architecture, known as ATLAS (Adaptive Tech Forward Lifestyle Architecture).

Tata Motors says that while the ATLAS can underpin various body styles, like MPVs and sedans, it has been optimised for ‘genuine SUV capabilities’. In a post-launch interview, Mohan Savarkar, chief product officer and vice president at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Limited, said, “To answer your 4x4 question, yes, it [ATLAS] can be made 4x4 with some changes.”

Given that Tata Motors does not currently offer a 4x4 in its lineup, including on the Nexon, from which the ATLAS design appears to have been derived based on similarities between internal components like the dashboard and the powertrain, the revelation is noteworthy.

Furthermore, the ATLAS architecture is expected to be used by the upcoming Nexon and maybe the Sierra, which opens up interesting 4x4 options with an ICE drivetrain. Additional potential characteristics of an SUV could include larger tires. According to Savarkar, ATLAS can fit tires up to 740 mm in outer diameter, meaning it can handle wheels up to 20 inches in diameter. Additionally, according to Tata Motors, ATLAS can support cars with different wheelbase and width that range in length from 3.7 to 4.7 meters.

There is little likelihood that 4X4 or all-wheel drive SUVs, which are in low demand in this market class, will become available on ATLAS-underpinned cars. With its dual-motor configuration, the forthcoming Harrier EV will probably be the first 4X4 in the company's current lineup.
