The Indian auto industry is looking at a strong retail performance through the end of 2024. With an estimated 4.8 million weddings scheduled in November and December, the wedding season is expected to fuel a surge in demand for goods and services, including vehicles. Historically, vehicle purchases rose during this time as many people buy cars as gifts or for personal use around weddings. As a result, the 2W (two-wheeler) and PV (passenger vehicle) segments are expected to see strong sales.
In the 2W category, several positive factors are set to drive demand. Good crop yields and favourable rural sentiment are expected to boost purchasing power, especially in rural areas where two-wheelers are often the preferred mode of transport. Additionally, the wedding season will encourage more vehicle purchases, particularly in the form of motorcycles and scooters, which are affordable and widely used across the country.
For the CV (commercial vehicle) segment, there are some positive factors but also some challenges. On the one hand, strong agricultural markets and bulk purchases from companies could continue to support demand. However, there are concerns due to sluggish construction activity, financial constraints some customers face, and a potential dip in demand once the wedding season ends. Dealers are cautious, expecting sales to slow down after the festivities, especially in certain areas.
In the PV segment, the ongoing wedding season and attractive promotional offers are expected to sustain demand. Many buyers take advantage of discounts and offers to purchase cars for weddings or as personal gifts. However, there are some concerns that some customers might delay their purchases in hopes of better deals at the year-end. FADA has also suggested that PV OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) should work on rationalizing supply to ensure a smooth flow of vehicles and avoid supply chain bottlenecks.
While the Indian auto industry is optimistic about near-term growth thanks to the wedding season and favorable market conditions, dealers remain cautious. They are mindful of potential slowdowns after the festivities, particularly if customers postpone purchases or if there are disruptions in the broader economy. The industry expects a strong finish to 2024, but there are challenges to keep an eye on as the year closes.
