Hyundai Motor Group announced on Wednesday that it has finished building an electric vehicle (EV) battery factory in Indonesia with LG Energy Solution Ltd. This new factory will help Hyundai make EVs entirely in Indonesia, giving the company a complete EV production system in Southeast Asia.

The group's separate car manufacturing plant in Indonesia plant will begin mass production of the KONA Electric EV starting this month using battery cells produced by HLI Green Power, Hyundai said.

Hyundai Motor Group said on Wednesday it has completed construction of an electric vehicle (EV) battery plant built jointly with LG Energy Solution Ltd. in Indonesia, allowing the South Korean automotive giant a fully-integrated EV production system in the Southeast Asian nation.

Hyundai Motor Group announced that they held a ceremony to celebrate the completion of the Hyundai LG Indonesia Green Power (HLI Green Power) battery plant. This plant is located in Karawang New Industry City, a manufacturing area in East Jakarta, Indonesia, according to Yonhap news agency.

“The group's separate car manufacturing plant in Indonesia plant will begin mass production of the KONA Electric EV starting this month using battery cells produced by HLI Green Power”, Hyundai said.

With the opening of HLI Green Power, Hyundai Motor Group now has a complete production system in Indonesia. This means they can make everything from EV battery cells to finished cars right in Indonesia. This gives Hyundai a strong advantage in the Southeast Asian EV market, not just in Indonesia.

Hyundai says that HLI Green Power began producing batteries in the second quarter of this year.

The completion ceremony was attended by 300 important guests from Indonesia and South Korea.

The battery cells made here will be used in EVs made at Hyundai's factory in Indonesia and in various Hyundai and Kia models in other countries.

The Kona Electric is the second EV model made at Hyundai's Indonesian plant, after the Ioniq 5. Hyundai expects the Kona Electric to be important for the growth of the EV market in Indonesia.
