FASTag

FASTag is a device which comes under the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) program. The FASTag uses Radio Frequency Identification Technology (RFID).

About FASTag

FASTag is an electronic toll collection method that is used for national highways. It is mandatory for all the vehicles and the Government wishes to implement the system through FASTag. Most of the people are using it and the rest are shifting to FASTag rapidly.

Uses of FASTag

FASTag is a tag which is fitted on vehicles and is operated by 23 banks Governed by National Payment Corporation of India (NPCI) and National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). It removes human intervention in the toll collection system by using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.

How FASTag Works?

When you approach the toll booth, the scanner scans the FASTag sticker and collects the information about the ID and digital wallet through RFID technology. After a successful scan the toll free is deducted from the digital wallet. It happens in a few seconds as you slowly approach the toll booth. The sticker looks like a normal sticker and it comprises an RFID circuit to communicate with the scanner.

Steps to follow the FASTag

  • When A vehicle passes through the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) lane of the toll plaza; the system captures the FASTag information like Tag ID, Vehicle class, TID, etc. and sends it to the bank.
  • The bank will send a request to the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) mapper to ensure the details.
  • The Tag ID is validated and the mapper will respond with the details like Tag status, vehicle class, VRN, etc.
  • If the Tag ID is not present in mapper then it will respond as the Tag ID is not registered.
  • The system can switch the debit request to the individual institution bank for debiting the account of the client.
  • The host can send the response message to the NETC system.
  • If the response is not sent at intervals the outlined TAT, the dealing is going to be thought of as Deemed accepted.
  • NETC system can apprise the response to the acquirer host.
  • The host can apprise the individual toll plaza system.
  • If the customer travels through a toll plaza without recharging then he will not be able to avail the NETC services and would be required to pay the toll fare through cash.

Why FASTag and What are the Benefits

When the people enter the toll plaza without FASTag then they need to pay double the toll amount. The Government has made FASTag mandatory for acquiring third party insurance for the vehicle.
