The draft guidelines proposed by the Ministry of Power set forth provisions for fast-tracking the adoption of electric vehicles in India.

On Monday, India's Ministry of Power suggested new rules to make it quicker to get electricity connections for electric vehicle (EV) charging stations.

In big cities, it now takes three days to get approval for electricity connections at EV charging stations. In other towns, it takes seven days, and in rural areas, it takes fifteen days after you apply for the connection.

Earlier guidelines from 2023 suggested that in big cities, it would take seven days to approve electricity connections for charging stations. In other towns, it would take fifteen days, and in rural areas, it would take thirty days.

The Ministry also said that State Nodal agencies and city authorities will check once a year to see where people need EV chargers the most.

The guidelines also say that charging stations should be closer together. They suggest putting one every 20 kilometers along highways, expressways, or roads, instead of the previous suggestion of 25 kilometers.

At least one charging station shall be available in a grid of 1 km x 1 km in the urban limits by FY2030, the guidelines say.

Any comments on the draft norms have to be submitted within 30 days.

According to Niti Aayog’s website, India has 399 startups making electric vehicles, including well-known names like Ola Electric, BlueSmart, and IPO-bound Ather Energy. In March, the government said it wants 30% of all vehicles sold to be electric by 2030.

The draft proposals aim to make electric vehicles more popular in India quickly. They aim to create better charging stations to help more people switch to electric vehicles.
